AECDC Distributes 1st Baby Box
Every year 3,500 infants in the US die from sleep-related incidents, often involving blankets or toys blocking the infants' flow of oxygen.
With a grant from the Center for Disease Control, New Jersey is the first state in the nation to offer these boxes free to all expectant parents. The Los Angeles-based Baby Box Company makes the sturdy, specially-designed boxes available after new or expectant parents watch a 15 minute video on safe sleeping habits for babies, and pass a 6-item quiz. Parents are then issued a certificate that they bring to a Baby Box distribution center and pick up the box, which includes a mattress, fitted sheet, diapers and coupons for baby necessities. The AECDC also can provide baby clothing and other accessories.
